EFS Technology has been a leading XML software provider to help companies comply with the
E-invoicing Danish Government Initiative that is being used as a model for other European
countries, including the UK.
The Danish Government has cut purchase invoice processing costs by 120-150 million per annum, by
requiring all suppliers to submit their invoices electronically in XML format. The advantage with XML,
is that unlike email or pdf, the e-invoice data can be immediately uploaded to the Governments computer
systems without manual input. However, the invoice can still be viewed onscreen as a document.
The e-invoice initiative has been so successful that it was recognised by the European Commission
e-government program and was awarded first prize in the prestigious category “Transformation -
Government readiness” at the November 2005 e-Government i2010 award ceremony. Claus Juhl, Director of
Danish Agency for Governmental Management comments: “the prize proves that Denmark has a leading edge
in terms of digitalisation. The project can be transferred to the entire EU and several EU-Governments,
including the UK, have shown interest for the Danish model”
Although e-invoicing was mandated by law, the 95% take up rate is largely attributed to the good
working relationships developed between the public and private organisations. In addition, a number of
software and service providers were encouraged to develop simple to use, inexpensive XML translation
systems, that would be able to convert a companies existing computer print output into the required
OIO-XML format. EFS Technology was one of the leading software providers helping around 50 Danish
government suppliers to meet the XML invoice starting date of February 2005.
